Carlos Coelho's report on security features and biometrics in passports and travel documents was today adopted in the European Parliament by 594 votes in favour, 51 against and 37 abstentions. With this report necessary measures will be taken to protect children against kidnapping and trafficking.
The use of biometric data in passports aims at reinforcing security and fighting against terrorism, criminality and clandestine immigration. During the negotiation process there was some controversy in the public opinion and in some institutions about the use of children's biometric data.
